I'm a Working Gal
My first official day as an intern.
What a rush.
I had two to three meetings today and quickly learned my importance at 8 Northumberland Ave. I finally began feeling like a working adult which is what I’ve wanted for a long time.
My first meeting was with the owner of the company, Charles. And he presented a power point to me, the same power point that the company shows to potential clients, that explains the science of their lighting in a very basic way.
After I got the run down of the lighting details in the venue, I then had another meeting with the HR representative, Angela, and Charles. This meeting was to clarify what exactly I would be doing during my internship. And for all of you wondering what I will be doing, here’s the run down:
I will be researching how LEDs and lights affect the attitudes and actions of people, and then turning that information into a sales pitch to help the customer better understand how 8 Northumberland’s Intelligent Lighting will improve their event while also catch the attention of their attendees. My research may also be turned into little blurbs of info to put on the website to inform future clients.
I also have three more meetings scheduled with technology professionals from different companies all in the next week!
But anyway… I started working right away. I have my own desk (HAHA WHAT??!?! I’m like an actual grown up) and I have my own computer that has TWO monitors (my dad will be really happy to hear that). Currently, I’m looking through different scholarly articles based on psychology of lighting, while also looking at partnering company’s websites of 8 Northumberland.
I can’t give too much information to you because I think it’s confidential and I’m still learning everything, so maybe I’ll be able to clarify later on.
Everyone I work with is so nice and accommodating. The HR rep gave me her number and told me to call if I ever had an emergency (work related or not) and I thought that was so thoughtful because I’ve never been offered that.
I was allowed to leave work at 5:45 and then I headed to The Horniman’s on the River Thames (the river that the London Bridge crosses over) for an MSU party! All the current alums of MSU that live in London were invited to The Horniman’s, as were all of the students that are currently studying abroad in London! There was an open bar and free food (and people that know what you’re talking about when you say Michigan) so it was a great night. We all had the chance to mingle and make connections with professionals that work in London and were able to ask them about the area and about their careers. I talked to two women who work at Google in London and Microsoft in London. They were both so nice and cool (as most Spartans are) and it made me feel like I could do anything, especially if two women like them made their way from the Midwest all the way to London!
Altogether it was a great Tuesday is London and of course, I know its going to get better. I can’t wait to contribute more to 8 Northumberland and see what comes of my research.
Until next time all who stumble upon this blog!
