Bright Young Women... Sick of Swimming

At 12:30 I left my dorm to make the short trip to Trafalgar Square, close to where 8 Northumberland is situated. It doesn’t take long to get settled in there, so once I arrived I sat at my desk and changed my shoes (I have quickly learned that a full day in heels, walking around London, is a STRONG no.). I promptly began working on my research, which is psychology based. After reviewing three of our partnering companies (Philips, Cisco, and amBX), I moved on to University Research based on the psychology of lights. There are many things to sift through, so it benefits me that I have over a month at 8 Northumberland so I can really investigate some of these case studies.

The work environment is one that I’ve never experienced before. At my last job I was a sales associate at Buckle, a clothing store, and at the beginning of every shift, we would get a briefing from our manager about our goals for the day and would often listen to voicemails from the CEO that were supposed to be uplifting and empowering to get us reading for a long day of sales. This work place is the complete opposite. I don’t have a manager telling me what to do for the day. I have my own desk and own work space and I don’t have to interact with customers (so far).

After taking notes with a pen and paper the previous day, I brought in my laptop to keep my notes more organized in a word doc that I could access away from the office. So there I was, working with 3 monitors and my own company email, when all I had at Buckle was a pen and a 4"x8" piece of paper to work with.

The second half of the day usually goes by fast and I listen in on the rest of the office’s sales calls and learn about some of 8 Northumberland’s clients. For example, my jaw dropped when I heard that we will be having one of the fashion shows for London’s fashion week in one of our Ballrooms (fingers crossed that I’m still here for that)! How amazing is that? You just don’t hear about things like that.. well maybe in London you do.

I usually don’t work Fridays, but tomorrow I have to go in at 3 for a meeting with an important client (which I have no problem with because we will most likely be meeting at my Boss’s restaurant and hopefully that means free food!!!).

On a complete different note, Trafalgar Square is right by my work (as you may have read before, and if you don’t know about it you should look it up because its one of my favorite places in London thus far) and they are currently setting up for West End Live (or something like that), where many or all of the shows form West End come to perform snippets of their shows to the public! So I’m hoping to catch that on my way out of work one of these days.

Each day gets more interesting and in a few hours I’ll be off to the office again, hopefully getting the chance to play with the lights in the ballroom. Charles is also having me read a book in which he is too bored to bother with, so as always- updates to come.

~author’s note, to help the people that don’t think as weird as I do: the title is referring to the song “Part of Your World” in which Ariel wants to be apart of the human world, but I’m using it in the context that I want to be apart of the professional and working world.. #TheMoreYouKnow
